==Taxonomy== The first [[Species description|formal description]] of the rock sparrow was by the Swedish naturalist [[Carl Linnaeus]] in 1766 in the [[12th edition of Systema Naturae|twelfth edition]] of his ''[[Systema Naturae]]''.
