Until the early 1920s, this spit stretched for many miles north, almost touching the Raven Point and giving a very narrow mouth to Wexford Harbour.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://consult.wexfordcoco.ie/en/consultation/draft-wexford-county-development-plan-2021-2027/chapter/section-4-rosslare-strand-specific-objectives#:~:text=A%20long%20sandspit%20stretching%20north,small%20fort%20called%20Rosslare%20Fort.|title=Wexford Development Plan|website=Wexfordcoco.ie|access-date=13 May 2022}}</ref> At the end of the spit was a small fort called Rosslare Fort. In the winter of 1924-25 a storm breached the spit and it was gradually washed away.
