== Personal life == Roy was born in [[Greene County, Virginia]], on February 7, 1912. He started working as a ranger in Shenandoah National Park in 1936.<ref name=hank>{{cite news|author=Hank Burchard|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1347&dat=19720502&id=OScVAAAAIBAJ&pg=7465,354926|access-date=August 18, 2009|title=Lightning strikes four times|publisher=The Ledger|date=May 2, 1972}}{{Dead link|date=February 2023 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref> Sullivan was described as a brawny man with a broad, rugged face, who resembled the actor [[Gene Hackman]]. He was said to have been avoided by people during the later years of his life, owing to fears of being struck by lightning, and that saddened him. He once recalled: "For instance, I was walking with the Chief Ranger one day when lightning struck way offβ (in the distance).
