== Early life and education == Rusty Schweickart was born October 25, 1935, in [[Neptune Township, New Jersey]], and grew up on a "hardscrabble" farm of {{convert|45|acre|}} producing hay and vegetables plus raising poultry and cows. As a youth his ambition was to be a [[Aviator|pilot]] and a [[cowboy]].<ref name="Pacific Sun-2004.07.07" /> After graduating from [[Manasquan High School]] in 1952, he earned a [[Bachelor of Science]] degree in [[Aerospace engineering|aeronautical engineering]] on scholarship (1956) and a [[Master of Science]] degree in [[aeronautics]] and [[astronautics]] (1963) from the [[Massachusetts Institute of Technology]].<ref name="NASA-bio Rusty Schweickart"/><ref>[http://alum.mit.edu MIT-alum Alumni list, MIT] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110712031436/http://alum.mit.edu/ |date=July 12, 2011 }}, [[Massachusetts Institute of Technology]] webpage.</ref> He was active in the [[Boy Scouts of America]].
