==Early life== Born in [[Nova Scotia]], his grandfather was a former slave from the [[United States]] who helped settle Weymouth Falls.<ref name="secreteast">[https://secreteast.ca/2018/07/sam-langford-footnote/ Sam Langford: a Canadian Boxing Footnote (1883 -1956)] secreteast.ca</ref> Langford left home as a youth to escape an abusive father.<ref name="secreteast"/> He made his way to [[Boston]], [[Massachusetts]] where he eventually found work as a [[janitor]] in a boxing gymnasium at the Lenox Athletic Club. Not long after he started working he was [[sparring]] and improving his own boxing skills.
