The root of the tribal name ''Scordisci'' has been compared to the root of {{langx|sq|hardh-je}}, {{lang|sq|hardh-ël}}, etc., meaning '[[lizard]]', from IE {{lang|ine-x-proto|skord-ula}} 'lizard', 'triton' or a similar animal, and in particular the Albanian variants {{lang|sq|hardhushkë}} and {{lang|sq|hardhjeshkë}} are regarded as derived from IE {{lang|ine-x-proto|skordiskā}}. Therefore the tribal name ''Scordisci'' would have been a totem name for 'lizard people'.{{sfn|Witczak|2011|p=244}} The root of the name ''Scordisci'' has also been compared to the [[Toponymy#Toponymic typology|oronym]] ''[[Scardus]]'', which features [[Illyrian language|Illyrian]] vocalism.{{sfn|Borel|2005|p=32}}
