==History== Scranton was [[plat]]ted in 1869, shortly after the Cedar Rapids & Missouri River Railroad was built through that territory.<ref name="history">{{cite book | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=NlM0AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA165 | title=Past and Present of Greene County, Iowa | publisher=Brookhaven Press | author=Stillman, Edwin B. | year=1907 | pages=165β166| isbn=9781581032482 }}</ref> It was named for Joseph H. Scranton of [[Scranton, Pennsylvania]],<ref>{{cite book|author=Chicago and North Western Railway Company|title=A History of the Origin of the Place Names Connected with the Chicago & North Western and Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railways|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=OspBAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA123|year=1908|page=123}}</ref> who supplied most of the iron rails in the construction of the railroad. Scranton was incorporated in 1880.<ref name="history" /> Scranton's water tower, built in 1897, is the oldest working water tower in Iowa and ninth oldest in the United States. A fire occurred at the tower in 1907, initially started to melt ice that had caused the town to be without water. Three men were injured attempting to put the fire out, although the tower itself did not suffer any major damage.<ref name="GreeneCDC">{{cite web|url=http://www.greenecountyiowadevelopment.org/gcdc-communities-scranton.php|title=Communities of Greene County - Scranton|publisher=Greene County Development Corp|accessdate=2009-01-18}}</ref>
