The name's [[Root (linguistics)|etymon]] may be [[Egyptian language|Egyptian]] ''šꜣsw'', which originally meant "those who move on foot". Levy, Adams, and Muniz report similar possibilities: the Egyptian word [[:wikt:šꜣs|šꜣs]] that means "to wander", and an alternative [[Semitic languages|Semitic]] [[triliteral root]], {{langx|he|שָׁסַס‎|šāsas}}, with the meaning "to plunder".{{sfn|Levy|Adams|Muniz|2004|p=66}}
