== Classification == Soqotri is often mistaken as a [[Varieties of Arabic|variety of Arabic]] but is typically classified as an [[Afroasiatic languages|Afro-Asiatic]], [[Semitic languages|Semitic]], South Semitic and South Arabian language.<ref name="Soqotri Ethnologue">{{cite news|url=https://www.ethnologue.com/language/sqt |title=Soqotri |work=Ethnologue |access-date=2017-05-04}}</ref> Scholars believe there are no longer any grounds for associating the Modern South Arabian languages so directly with Arabic.
