== Early life ==
Sakai was born '''Masahiko Sakai''' (坂井雅彦) in [[Kyoto, Japan]], to Akio and Teruko Sakai. His father was a [[Nisei|second-generation Japanese American]] from [[Hawaii]], who was stationed in Japan with the [[U.S. occupation of Japan|U.S. occupation forces]].<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |date=2011-05-04 |title=Stan Sakai: The Cartoonist |url=http://discovernikkei.org/en/journal/2011/5/4/stan-sakai/ |access-date=2024-05-23 |website=Discover Nikkei}}</ref> Sakai and his family moved back to Hawaii when he was two years old,<ref name=":0" /> and Sakai was raised in the [[Kaimuki, Hawaii|Kaimuki]] neighborhood of [[Honolulu]].
He studied Fine Arts (disciplines) at the University of Hawaii before continuing his training at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
