==Geography== ===Location=== The city of Stralsund is located in northeastern Germany in the region of Western Pomerania in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Stralsund is located south west of Rügen. It is separated by a small body of water named the Strelasund, which stretches out to the Baltic Sea. ===Climate=== Its annual precipitation is 656 mm (25.8 inches) and comparatively low, falling within the lowest third of all precipitation values in Germany. The driest month is February; the most precipitation falls in July. The precipitation varies relatively moderately throughout the year. Only 40% of weather stations in Germany exhibit lower seasonal variation. {{Weather box |width = 100% |location = Stralsund, elevation: 13 m, 1991–2021 normals |collapsed = |metric first = Yes |single line = Yes |Jan record high C = |Feb record high C = |Mar record high C = |Apr record high C = |May record high C = |Jun record high C = |Jul record high C = |Aug record high C = |Sep record high C = |Oct record high C = |Nov record high C = |Dec record high C = |year record high C = |Jan high C = 2.9 |Feb high C = 3.7 |Mar high C = 6.9 |Apr high C = 12.0 |May high C = 16.6 |Jun high C = 19.8 |Jul high C = 22.2 |Aug high C = 21.8 |Sep high C = 18.1 |Oct high C = 12.9 |Nov high C = 7.8 |Dec high C = 4.4 |year high C = |Jan mean C = 1.1 |Feb mean C = 1.4 |Mar mean C = 3.8 |Apr mean C = 8.1 |May mean C = 12.8 |Jun mean C = 16.2 |Jul mean C = 18.7 |Aug mean C = 18.3 |Sep mean C = 14.9 |Oct mean C = 10.3 |Nov mean C = 5.9 |Dec mean C = 2.7 |year mean C = |Jan low C = -0.9 |Feb low C = -0.8 |Mar low C = 0.7 |Apr low C = 4.2 |May low C = 8.6 |Jun low C = 12.2 |Jul low C = 14.9 |Aug low C = 14.7 |Sep low C = 11.8 |Oct low C = 7.8 |Nov low C = 3.9 |Dec low C = 0.9 |year low C = |Jan record low C = |Feb record low C = |Mar record low C = |Apr record low C = |May record low C = |Jun record low C = |Jul record low C = |Aug record low C = |Sep record low C = |Oct record low C = |Nov record low C = |Dec record low C = |year record low C = |precipitation colour = green |Jan precipitation mm = 54.0 |Feb precipitation mm = 45.0 |Mar precipitation mm = 50.0 |Apr precipitation mm = 48.0 |May precipitation mm = 62.0 |Jun precipitation mm = 77.0 |Jul precipitation mm = 84.0 |Aug precipitation mm = 82.0 |Sep precipitation mm = 61.0 |Oct precipitation mm = 56.0 |Nov precipitation mm = 52.0 |Dec precipitation mm = 55.0 |year precipitation mm = |Jan precipitation days = 9 |Feb precipitation days = 8 |Mar precipitation days = 8 |Apr precipitation days = 8 |May precipitation days = 9 |Jun precipitation days = 9 |Jul precipitation days = 10 |Aug precipitation days = 10 |Sep precipitation days = 8 |Oct precipitation days = 8 |Nov precipitation days = 9 |Dec precipitation days = 9 |year precipitation days = |Jan sun = 83.7 |Feb sun = 103.6 |Mar sun = 164.3 |Apr sun = 261.0 |May sun = 313.3 |Jun sun = 318.0 |Jul sun = 331.7 |Aug sun = 303.8 |Sep sun = 219.0 |Oct sun = 155.0 |Nov sun = 90.0 |Dec sun = 71.3 |year sun = |source = Climate-Data.org }} ===Landscape=== The city lies on the sound of Strelasund, a strait of the Baltic Sea. Its geographic proximity to the island of Rügen, whose only fixed link to the mainland, the Strelasund Crossing, runs between Stralsund and the village of Altefähr, has given Stralsund the sobriquet "Gateway to the Island of Rügen" (Tor zur Insel Rügen). Stralsund is located close to the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. Stralsund's city borough includes municipal forest and three municipal ponds (the Knieperteich, Frankenteich and Moorteich. The three ponds and the Strelasund lend the Old Town, the original settlement site and historic centre of the city, a protected island ambience. The highest point of the city is the Galgenberg ("Gallows Hill") on its western approaches. ===Subdivisions=== The city's territory covers an area of 54.07 km2, which makes Stralsund, with its nearly 58,000 inhabitants one of the most densely populated cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (1,480 inhabitants per km<sup>2</sup>). In the local area around Stralsund there are also the towns of Barth and Ribnitz-Damgarten. Many of the smaller villages in the vicinity, like Prohn or Negast, have grown sharply after 1990 as a result of the influx of those living or working in Stralsund.
