== Definitions == The terms ''surge protection device'' (''SPD'') and ''transient voltage surge suppressor'' (''TVSS'') are used to describe electrical devices typically installed in power distribution panels, [[process control system]]s, communications systems, and other heavy-duty industrial systems, for the purpose of protecting against electrical surges and spikes, including those caused by [[lightning]]. Scaled-down versions of these devices are sometimes installed in residential service entrance electrical panels to protect equipment in a household from similar hazards.<ref>{{cite web |title=Surge Protection in Low-Voltage AC Power Circuits β An Anthology Part 8 β Coordination of Cascaded Surge-Protective Devices |url=https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/Legacy/IR/nistir6714-8.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201208085801/https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/Legacy/IR/nistir6714-8.pdf |archive-date=8 December 2020 |access-date=15 June 2022 |website=NIST}}</ref>
