== Toponym == Sutton Hoo derives its name from [[Old English]]. ''Sut'' combined with ''tun'' means the "southern farmstead" or "settlement" and ''hoo'' refers to a hill "shaped like a heel spur".<ref>{{cite web |title=Sutton |url=http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/county/Suffolk |work=Key to English place names |publisher=University of Nottingham |access-date=24 February 2014 |archive-date=14 February 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210214090833/http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/county/Suffolk |url-status=live }}</ref><ref name=stan>{{cite web |url=https://web.stanford.edu/group/texttechnologies/cgi-bin/stanfordnottingham/places/?suttonhoo |title=Lost Myths of Time: Sutton Hoo |publisher=Stanford.edu |access-date=9 June 2020 |archive-date=8 February 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220208110548/https://web.stanford.edu/group/texttechnologies/cgi-bin/stanfordnottingham/places/?suttonhoo |url-status=dead }}</ref> Hoo was recorded in the [[Domesday Book]] as ''Hoi'' / ''Hou''.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/suffolk3.html#hoosutton |title=Suffolk FβH |publisher=The Domesday Book Online |access-date=14 July 2021 |archive-date=6 August 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170806221326/http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/suffolk3.html#hoosutton |url-status=live }}</ref>
