== Early life==
Nichols was born in [[Lapeer, Michigan]]. He was raised on a farm,<ref name=wp2/> the third of four children of Joyce and Robert Nichols.<ref name=fox2/><ref name=dp1/> Growing up, he helped his parents on the farm,<ref name=nytimes_second/> learning to operate and maintain the equipment.<ref name=dbio1/> According to the ''[[Denver Post]]'', he also cared for injured birds and animals.<ref name=dbio1/>
