==Life== Little is known about the life of Theano, and the few details on her life from ancient testimony are contradictory.{{sfn|Plant|2004|p=69}} According to [[Porphyry (philosopher)|Porphyry]], she came from [[Crete]] and was the daughter of [[Pythonax]].<ref name="porphyry4">Porphyry, ''Life of Pythagoras'', 4</ref>{{sfn|Suda, Theano}} In the catalog of [[Aristoxenus of Tarentum]] quoted by [[Iamblichus]], she is the wife of [[Brontinus]], and from [[Metapontum]] in [[Magna Graecia]], while [[Diogenes Laertius]] reports a tradition from [[Hermesianax (poet)|Hermesianax]] where she came from [[Crotone]], was the daughter of [[Brontinus]], married Pythagoras,{{sfn|Suda, Pythagoras}}<ref>{{cite LotEP| chapter=Pythagoras}}</ref>{{sfn|Suda, Theano}} and while some claim that after Pythagoras' passing, she took over his school,<ref>{{Cite web |title=Theano |url=https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/eascfa/dinner_party/heritage_floor/theano |access-date=2024-03-01 |website=www.brooklynmuseum.org |language=en}}</ref> the evidence is overwhelmingly clear that was not the case.{{sfn|Deakin|2013}}
