==Biography== Gomperz studied at Brno and at [[University of Vienna|Vienna]] under [[Hermann Bonitz]]. Graduating at the [[University of Vienna]] in 1867 he became ''[[privatdozent]]'', and subsequently a professor of [[classical philology]] (1873). In 1882 he was elected a full member of the [[Vienna Academy of Sciences]]. He received the degree of [[Doctor of Philosophy]] ''[[honoris causa]]'' from the [[University of Königsberg]], and Doctor of Literature from the universities of [[university of Dublin|Dublin]] and [[university of Cambridge|Cambridge]], and became correspondent for several learned societies.<ref name="EB1911">{{EB1911|inline=y|wstitle=Gomperz, Theodor|volume=12|page=230}}</ref> Gomperz resigned his professorship at Vienna in order to devote all his energy to his magnum opus ''Griechische Denker'' ("Greek Thinkers"), which first appeared in 1893.<ref>[http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/6802-gomperz-theodor Gomperz, Theodor] by: [[Isidore Singer]]. at [[Jewish Encyclopedia]]</ref> He died in [[Baden bei Wien]].<ref>{{Cite EB1922|title=Gomperz, Theodor|volume=31|page=298|url=https://archive.org/details/encyclopaediabri31chisrich/page/298/mode/1up}}</ref>
