It is a loan word from the French fr (15th century), presumably by the way of the Spanish es 'woman's headdress', from Arabic ar طاقة, itself from Old Persian peo 'veil, shawl'. The word br in Breton means 'hat'. The spelling with ⟨que⟩ is Middle Breton, and the Modern Breton spelling is br. Old Breton spells the word br.
