The genus name, ''[[clover|Trifolium]]'', derives from the Latin ''{{lang|la|[[:wikt:tres|tres]]}}'', "three", and ''{{lang|la|[[:wikt:folium|folium]]}}'', "leaf", so called from the characteristic form of the leaf, which almost always has three [[leaflet (botany)|leaflets]] ([[trifoliolate]]); hence the popular name "[[trefoil]]". The species name, ''{{lang|la|[[:wikt:repens|repens]]}}'', is Latin for "creeping".
