The city's name derives from the ancient ''Trikka'' or ''Trikke'' ({{langx|grc|Τρίκκα}} or {{lang|grc|Τρίκκη}}), which was itself named after a nymph that was a daughter of [[Peneus]] or [[Asopos]]. The name ''Trikala'' appears in the [[Byzantine]] period. In [[Turkish language|Turkish]], the city is known as {{lang|tr|Tırhala}}. In [[Aromanian language|Aromanian]] it is known as {{lang|rup|Trikolj}}.
