== Name variations == Native speakers of Tuvaluan have various names for their language. In the language itself, it is often referred to as {{lang|tvl|te ggana Tuuvalu}} which translates to "the Tuvaluan language", or less formally as {{lang|tvl|te ggana a tatou}}, meaning "our language".{{sfn|Besnier|2000|p=xxi}} The dialects of Vaitupi and Funafuti are together known as a standard language called {{lang|tvl|te 'gana māsani}}, meaning ‘the common language’.<ref name="Omniglot"/> Formerly, the country of Tuvalu was known as the Ellice Islands and the Tuvaluan language is also therefore known as ''Ellice'' or ''Ellicean.''<ref>{{Cite web|website=Catalogue of Endangered Languages|date=2020|title=Tuvaluan|url=http://www.endangeredlanguages.com/lang/3487.|access-date=November 16, 2020}}</ref>
