== Early life== Winchell was born in [[New York City]], the son of Jennie (Bakst) and Jacob Winchell, a cantor and salesman; they were Russian Jewish immigrants.<ref name=ANB>{{cite book |url=http://oxfordindex.oup.com/view/10.1093/anb/9780198606697.article.1602802?rskey=bjfCVl&result=24 |author-link=Thomas C.
