==Early life and education==

In 1969, he received an [[associate's degree]] from [[Wesley College (Delaware)|Wesley College]] in [[Dover, Delaware]].<ref name=":0" /> He then spent a semester in [[Kentucky]] studying rural poverty in [[Appalachia]].
