== Public space == The [[Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities|UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities]] (2006) requires 'appropriate measures' to ensure people with disabilities are able to 'access, on an equal basis with others','the physical environment', 'transportation' and 'other facilities and services open or provided to the public'. This requirement also applies to 'roads' and 'transportation' as well as 'buildings, and other indoor and outdoor facilities'.<ref>{{Cite web |date=12 December 2006 |title=Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities |url=https://www.ohchr.org/en/instruments-mechanisms/instruments/convention-rights-persons-disabilities |access-date=30 October 2024 |website=Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)}}</ref> At the same time, promotion of [[Active mobility|active travel]], or 'shared space' initiatives to pedestrianise city centres can introduce unintended barriers, especially for pedestrians who are visually impaired and who can find these environments confusing or even dangerous.<ref name=":0">{{Cite journal |last1=Lawson |first1=Anna |last2=EskytΔ |first2=Ieva |last3=Orchard |first3=Maria |last4=Houtzager |first4=Dick |last5=De Vos |first5=Edwin Luitzen |date=2022-06-26 |title=Pedestrians with Disabilities and Town and City Streets: From Shared to Inclusive Space? |url=https://www.journalpublicspace.org/index.php/jps/article/view/1603 |journal=The Journal of Public Space |volume=7 |issue=2 |pages=41β62 |doi=10.32891/jps.v7i2.1603 |issn=2206-9658|doi-access=free }}</ref> It is important to have effective mechanisms to ensure that urban spaces are designed to be inclusive of pedestrians with disabilities.
