===Local government=== Alor Setar has been governed by a town council form of government since 1905 following the establishment of Alor Star Sanitary Board.<ref>{{cite web |title= Alor Setar Dulu dan Sekarang|url=http://www.memori-kedah.com/page_pengenalan.php?pageNum_Recordset1=6&totalRows_Recordset1=11&p=2&idstopic=42&idskandungan=185&mtopic=5|website= Memori Kedah}}</ref> By 2013, it was elevated to be a city status by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and being administered as [[Alor Setar City Council|Majlis Bandaraya Alor Setar]]. The current mayor of Alor Setar is Mohd Zohdi Saad.
