However, these extra-marital relationships were conditional on his lovers having a good relationship with his wife: he later stated that he "could not imagine loving anyone who was not very fond of Jennifer".<ref name=saunders /> She was made a [[Order of the British Empire|DBE]] for services to ancient and historical buildings. They had two sons, Charles and Edward, and a daughter, Cynthia.
