Policing of the Zone is conducted by special units of the [[Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine]] and, along the border with Belarus, by the [[State Border Guard Service of Ukraine]]. The SAUEZM is tasked with:<ref name="Presidential Decree" /> # Conducting environmental and radioactivity monitoring in the zone # Management of long-term storage and disposal of radioactive waste # Leasing of land in the exclusion zone and the zone of absolute (mandatory) resettlement # Administering of state funds for radioactive waste management # Monitoring and preservation of documentation on the subject of radioactivity # Coordination of the decommissioning of the nuclear power plant # Maintenance of a register of persons who have suffered as a result of the disaster The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is located inside the zone but is administered separately. Plant personnel, 3,800 workers {{as of|2009|lc=y}}, reside primarily in Slavutych, a specially-built remote city in [[Kyiv Oblast]] outside of the Exclusion Zone, {{convert|45|km|0}} east of the accident site.
