Although simplified [[design]]s with simple, clear lines had already been produced in the 20th century, the boom of designer cuckoo clocks was initiated in the 2000s (the first examples dating back to the 1990s), particularly in [[Italy]],<ref name="Juan F"/> [[Germany]] and [[Japan]]. There are a wide variety of models, many of them [[avant-garde]] creations made of different materials and [[List of geometric shapes|geometric shapes]], such as rhombuses, squares, cubes, circles, rectangles, etc. Without carving, these clocks are usually flat and smooth. Some are painted in a single colour while others are polychromes with abstract or figurative paintings, others include text and phrases, etc. About the clockwork, there are quartz, mechanical and sometimes, digital.
