First sighted from a distance of {{convert|20|nmi}} from the USS ''Glacier'' on February 5, 1962. 
Named for Chief Warrant Officer S.L. Dean, United States Navy, Electrical Officer on the Glacier at the time of discovery.{{sfn|Alberts|1995|p=178}}
