===Homeostasis=== It plays a role in a variety of homeostatic functions related to basic survival needs, such as taste, visceral sensation, and autonomic control. The insula controls autonomic functions through the regulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.<ref>{{cite journal |vauthors=Oppenheimer SM, Gelb A, Girvin JP, Hachinski VC |title=Cardiovascular effects of human insular cortex stimulation |journal=Neurology |volume=42 |issue=9 |pages=1727–32 |date=September 1992 |pmid=1513461 |doi=10.1212/wnl.42.9.1727|s2cid=32371468 }}</ref><ref name="Critchley">{{cite journal |author=Critchley HD |title=Neural mechanisms of autonomic, affective, and cognitive integration |journal=J.
