A [[Welfare queen]] is a derogatory term for a person, almost exclusively female and usually a [[Single parent|single mother]], who lives primarily from welfare and other public assistance funds. The term implies that the person collects welfare, charity, or other handouts either fraudulently or excessively and that the person intentionally chooses to live "on the dole" as opposed to seeking gainful employment, ostensibly due to laziness.
