==== Strings as records ==== Many languages, including object-oriented ones, implement strings as [[record (computer science)|record]]s with an internal structure like: <syntaxhighlight lang="cpp"> class string { size_t length; char *text; }; </syntaxhighlight> However, since the implementation is usually [[information hiding|hidden]], the string must be accessed and modified through member functions. <code>text</code> is a pointer to a dynamically allocated memory area, which might be expanded as needed.
