This version of Rhodes begins as the military liaison to [[Stark Industries]] as well as [[Tony Stark (Marvel Cinematic Universe)|Tony Stark]]'s best friend,{{Sfn|Chambliss|2015|pp=159β160}} and he serves as the responsible character who acts as a foil to Stark's impulsiveness.{{Sfn|Nama|2011|p=81}} He first appeared in the franchise's inaugural film, ''[[Iron Man (2008 film)|Iron Man]]'' (2008), played by [[Terrence Howard]]. Howard was replaced by [[Don Cheadle]], who played the character in ''[[Iron Man 2]]'' (2010), ''[[Iron Man 3]]'' (2013), ''[[Avengers: Age of Ultron]]'' (2015), ''[[Captain America: Civil War]]'' (2016), ''[[Avengers: Infinity War]]'' (2018), [[Captain Marvel (film)|''Captain Marvel'']] (2019), ''[[Avengers: Endgame]]'' (2019), ''[[The Falcon and the Winter Soldier]]'' (2021), ''[[What If...? (TV series)|What If...?]]'' (2021), and ''[[Secret Invasion (miniseries)|Secret Invasion]]'' (2023).
