As superoxide is produced, the number of oxidised cytochrome c<sup>3+</sup> increases, and reduced cytochrome c<sup>2+</sup> decreases.<ref>{{Cite journal |vauthors=McCord JM, Fridovich I |date=November 1969 |title=Superoxide dismutase.
