===Rules===
The rules for playing duplicate bridge are formally titled ''The Laws of Duplicate Bridge'' and are issued by the World Bridge Federation and its member governing bodies. The Laws are designed to define correct procedure and to provide an adequate remedy when there is a departure from correct procedure. They are primarily designed not as punishment for irregularities but rather for the rectification of situations where nonoffenders may otherwise be damaged.<ref>Introduction to the ''Laws of Duplicate Bridge'' issued by the World Bridge Federation.</ref>

While the majority of primary rules are universal in application, authority to prescribe certain rules, procedures, and requirements of competition and participation are delegated to local governing bodies down to and including the club level.
