=== Hazara Refugees === Rather than process their claims within its own country, from 2001 to 2008 the Australian federal government moved and detained up to 1200 refugees at a time on Nauru. The majority of these were Hazara people, who faced persecution in Afghanistan. Beginning on 10 December 10, 2003 detainees began a hunger strike, which within a fortnight came to involve forty people. Timed to coincide with World Human Rights Day the protest brought much international attention to the plight of the refugees and their demand to be resettled, despite the Australian government initially refusing to acknowledge or comment on the matter.<ref>{{Cite web |last=King |first=Hanna |date=2021-09-30 |title=Hazara asylum seekers hunger strike on Nauru, 2003-2004 |url=https://commonslibrary.org/hazara-asylum-seekers-hunger-strike-on-nauru-2003-2004/ |access-date=2025-02-05 |website=The Commons Social Change Library |language=en-AU}}</ref>
