== Regulation in the US == Starting with U.S. automobiles manufactured on or after 1 September 1979, the [[NHTSA]] required speedometers to have a special emphasis on [[National Maximum Speed Law|55 mph]] (90 km/h) and display no more than a maximum speed of 85 mph (136 km/h). On 25 March 1982, the NHTSA revoked the rule because no "significant safety benefits" could come from maintaining the standard.<ref>{{cite journal |url= https://www.iihs.org/externaldata/srdata/docs/sr1705.pdf |title=Child Restraint Law Adopted in Virginia | journal=The Highway Loss Reduction Status Report |volume=17 |issue=5 |publisher=Insurance Institute for Highway Safety |date=1 April 1982 |access-date=10 April 2019 }}</ref>
