===Software=== The [[VRML|Virtual Reality Modelling Language]] (VRML), first introduced in 1994, was intended for the development of "virtual worlds" without dependency on headsets.<ref name="W3 VRML archive">{{cite web|title=VRML Virtual Reality Modeling Language|url=https://www.w3.org/MarkUp/VRML/|website=www.w3.org|access-date=20 March 2017}}</ref> The [[Web3D]] consortium was subsequently founded in 1997 for the development of industry standards for web-based 3D graphics.
