There are reports of self-emasculation cases resulting from [[mental disorder]]. [[Parsifal|Klingsor]]<ref>https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/a624/e99d66d95c8d2d3bb663b459212b32422189.pdf</ref> syndrome (sometimes known as [[Skoptsy|Skotpic]] syndrome) is a condition where people mutilate their genitals as a result of psychotic [[religious delusion]]s. {{Sfnm|1a1=Coleman|1a2=Cesnik|1y=1990|1p=204|2a1=Money|2y=1988|2p=114|3a1=Schweitzer|3y=1990|3pp=566, 568–569}} For example, in one case a person is reported to have mutilated his genitals after experiencing [[auditory hallucination]]s telling him he would only be allowed into the [[Kingdom of heaven (Gospel of Matthew)|kingdom of heaven]] if he emasculated himself.{{Sfn|Evens|Whittle|Rous|1977|p=775}}

[[Body integrity dysphoria]], or xenomelia, is another mental disorder that may drive a person to seek emasculation.{{Sfnm|1a1=Jackowich|1a2=Vale|1a3=Vale|1a4=Wassersug|1y=2014|1p=122|2a1=Johnson|2a2=Wassersug|2a3=Roberts|2a4=Sutherland|2y=2010|2p=854}} People with this disorder are distressed by the presence of a limb that they do not identify as part of their body, including the genitals. Emasculation in this context alleviates their distress, enabling them to become 'whole'.{{Sfn|Johnson|Wassersug|Roberts|Sutherland|2010|p=854}} However, the amputation of healthy limbs by medical professionals is highly controversial. Occasionally, self-emasculation is practiced by those suffering from gender dysphoria.{{Sfn|Jackowich|Vale|Vale|Wassersug|2014|p=122}} When compared with the general population, transgender persons are at a higher risk of engaging in acts of genital self-mutilation, including self-emasculation.{{Sfn|Mellon|Barlow|Cook|Clark|1989|p=125}}
