The Citizenship (Amendment) Ordinance 2005 was promulgated by the President of India and came into force on 28 June 2005.<ref name="The Citizenship (Amendment) Ordinance">[https://prsindia.org/files/bills_acts/acts_parliament/2005/the-citizenship-(amendment)-act-2005.pdf], "It shall be deemed to have come into force on the 28th day of June, 2005" (p1)</ref> Following these reforms, Indian nationality law largely follows the ''[[jus sanguinis]]'' (citizenship by right of blood) as opposed to the ''[[jus soli]]'' (citizenship by right of birth within the territory).{{citation needed|date=December 2019}} In 2019, a [[Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019|Citizenship Amendment Act]] was passed by the Parliament of India.
