===Ireland=== The only 'ancient university' in Ireland, North or South, is the University of Dublin. Created during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, it is modelled on the collegiate universities of Cambridge and Oxford. However, only one constituent college was ever founded, hence the curious position of Trinity College, Dublin (TCD), today. All of the teaching is provided by the college, with degrees being awarded by the university. Within the Republic of Ireland, the four constituent universities of the federal National University of Ireland (NUI) are, for all essential purposes, independent universities. The other truly collegiate university in Ireland is Ulster University, which is located in Northern Ireland (see United Kingdom on this list).
