The NEP, which raised the price of fuel in the West and coincided with a hike in provincial gas taxes in Ontario and Quebec,<ref name="Montreal_Gazette_1985">{{cite news |work=Montreal Gazette |date=8 June 1985 |title=Equity markets lose momentum |location=Montreal |access-date=27 January 2015 |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1946&dat=19850608&id=KyAyAAAAIBAJ&sjid=36UFAAAAIBAJ&pg=4911,4256194}}</ref> made the retail price of gasoline in Canada become noticeably higher than that of the US, a trend that has continued ever since.
