== Competition == A powerlifting competition takes place as follows: <blockquote> Each competitor is allowed three attempts on each of the squat, bench press, and deadlift, depending on their standing and the organization they are lifting in. The lifter's best valid attempt on each lift counts toward the competition total. For each weightclass, the lifter with the highest total wins. In many meets, the lifter with the highest total relative to their weight class also wins.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Ball |first=Robert |last2=Weidman |first2=Drew |date=2018 |title=Analysis of USA Powerlifting Federation Data From January 1, 2012βJune 11, 2016 |url=https://journals.lww.com/nsca-jscr/fulltext/2018/07000/analysis_of_usa_powerlifting_federation_data_from.6.aspx |journal=The Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research |language=en-US |volume=32 |issue=7 |pages=1843 |doi=10.1519/JSC.0000000000002103 |issn=1064-8011}}</ref> If two or more lifters achieve the same total, the lighter lifter ranks above the heavier lifter.<ref>IPF {{cite web |date=March 2007 |title=IPF Technical Rules Book 2007 |url=http://www.powerlifting-ipf.com/IPF_rulebook_2007.pdf |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070929023106/http://www.powerlifting-ipf.com/IPF_rulebook_2007.pdf |archive-date=29 September 2007 |access-date=12 August 2007 |website=International Powerlifting Federation}} {{small|(523 KB)}} (PDF), p. 3.
