===Context=== Context-dependency effects on recall are typically interpreted as evidence that the characteristics of the environment are encoded as part of the memory trace and can be used to enhance retrieval of the other information in the trace.<ref>{{cite journal | last1 = Eich | first1 = J.E. | year = 1980 | title = The cue-dependent nature of state-dependent retrieval | journal = Memory and Cognition | volume = 8 | issue = 2| pages = 157β173 | doi=10.3758/bf03213419| pmid = 7382817 | doi-access = free }}</ref> In other words, you can recall more when the environments are similar in both the learning and recall phases. Context cues appear to be important in the retrieval of newly learned meaningful information. In a classic study by Godden and Baddeley (1975), using free recall of wordlist demonstrated that deep-sea divers had better recall when there was a match between the learning and recalling environment. Lists learned underwater were recalled best underwater and lists learned on land were recalled best on land."<ref>{{cite journal | last1 = Godden | first1 = D.R. | last2 = Baddeley | first2 = A.D. | year = 1975 | title = Context-dependent memory in two natural environments: on land and underwater | journal = British Journal of Psychology | volume = 66 | issue = 3| pages = 325β331 | doi=10.1111/j.2044-8295.1975.tb01468.x| s2cid = 10699186 }}</ref> An academic application would be that students may perform better on exams by studying in silence, because exams are usually done in silence.<ref>{{cite journal | last1 = Grant | first1 = H.
