=== China === According to Lu Liu and Li Chen, police tactical units in China are called ‘Te Jing’ which literally translates into ‘special police’ and are a short form for ‘special weapons and tactics’ (SWAT).<ref name=LuandLi>{{cite journal |last1=Chen |first1=Li |last2=Liu |first2=Lu |title=Demystifying China’s police tactical units |journal=International Journal of Law, Crime and Justice |date=June 2023 |volume=73 |doi=10.1016/j.ijlcj.2023.100595 |at=100595 |issn=1756-0616}}</ref> China's SWAT members can be distinguished by their dark combat uniforms and the ‘SWAT’ embroidery on it, and their access to better equipment and weaponry.<ref name=LuandLi/> SWAT teams formally become a part of China's policing system in 2005 and unofficial statistics have suggested rapid proliferation of the teams across China in the years since. According to one study the authors cited, from 2005-2011, the number of SWAT teams grew from 0 to more than 900 with more than 48,000 enlisted officers.<ref name=LuandLi/>
