In [[Somalia]], [[Somali language#Varieties|Northern Somali]] (or North-Central Somali) forms the basis for [[Somali language|Standard Somali]],{{sfnp|Dalby|1998|p=571}} particularly the [[Mudug]] dialect of the northern [[Darod]] clan. Northern Central Somali has frequently been used by famous [[List of Somali poets|Somali poets]] as well as the political elite, and thus has the most prestige among other Somali dialects.{{sfnp|Saeed|1999|p=5}}
