The German forces committed to Normandy since D-Day had been virtually annihilated—by the end of Operation Tractable, the 12th SS Panzer Division, the main adversary of the Canadians, had lost 80% of its tanks,<ref name="DEste432">D'Este, p. 432</ref> 70% of its personnel carriers,<ref name="DEste432"/> and 60% of its artillery.<ref name="DEste432"/> Shortly afterwards, the 2nd Division moved to Foret de la Londe, along the valley of the River Seine. From 27 to 29 August, the 4th and 6th Brigades were engaged in heavy fighting against the rearguard of German forces seeking to withdraw across the Seine.<ref name="Zuehlke, p. 169"/>
