== Bi-directional operation == [[File:Bidirectional_AWS.jpg|thumb|Bidirectional AWS, the permanent magnet is in the middle and there is an electromagnet on each side of it]] Because the permanent magnet is located in the centre of the track, it operates in both directions. The permanent magnet can be suppressed by an electric coil of suitable strength. Where signals applying to opposing directions of travel on the same line are suitably positioned relative to each other (i.e. facing each other and about 400yds apart), common track equipment may be used, comprising an unsuppressed permanent magnet sandwiched between with both signals' electro-magnets.
