That year, seven of the busiest ten container ports were in the [[People's Republic of China]], with [[Port of Shanghai|Shanghai]] in 1st place, [[Port of Ningbo|Ningbo]] 3rd, [[Port of Shenzhen|Shenzhen]] 4th, [[Port of Guangzhou|Guangzhou]] 5th, [[Port of Qingdao|Qingdao]] 7th, [[Port of Hong Kong|Hong Kong]] 8th and [[Port of Tianjin|Tianjin]] 9th.<ref name=":0" />

Rounding out the top ten ports were [[Port of Singapore|Singapore]] at 2nd, [[Port of Busan|Busan]] in South Korea at 6th and [[Port of Rotterdam|Rotterdam]] in the Netherlands in the 10th position.<ref name=":0" />

In total, the busiest twenty container ports handled 220,905,805 TEU in 2009, almost half of the world's total estimated container traffic that year of 465,597,537 TEU.<ref name="unctad97" />
