===Insurance claims=== {{See also|Lloyd's of London#Late 1980s: Piper Alpha and the LMX spiral}} The disaster led to insurance claims of around US$1.4 billion, making it at that time the largest insured man-made catastrophe. Subsequently, the contractors appealed the decision to the [[House of Lords]] in London in November 2001, but their appeal was rejected. As a result, Elf and their insurers were able to recoup Β£136 million with accrued interest.<ref name=":2" />
