== Early release == Judges may have the power to alter and amend the probation terms, conditions and period. Such powers are commonly held by judges in the United States. Pursuant to the authority of a court, it may be possible for a defendant to apply for early discharge from probation after some of the probation period has been completed. For example, in the U.S. state of Georgia an offender may apply for early termination of felony probation after serving at least three years of the sentence. <ref>{{Cite web |title=Early Termination of Probation |url=https://gjp.org/early-termination-of-probation/ |access-date=2023-06-05 |website=Georgia Justice Project |language=en-US}}</ref> In the U.S., when deciding whether to grant early discharge a judge will typically consider factors such as whether the probationer has complied with all the terms of probation, paid all fines, fees, court costs and restitution and would experience a hardship if the probation period continued.<ref>{{cite web |last1=Price |first1=Jeremy |title=Probation, Mandatory Supervision, Parole, and Postrelease Community Supervision: Understanding the Differences |url=https://www.fdap.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Supervision-Overview.pdf |website=FDAP |publisher=First District Appellate Project |access-date=17 January 2025 |page=12}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Guide to Judiciary Policy Vol. 8: Probation and Pretrial Services |url=https://www.uscourts.gov/file/78805/download |website=United States Courts |publisher=Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts |access-date=17 January 2025 |pages=3β7}}</ref>
